Frequently asked questions
Clear answers to the questions we hear most often, including the honest trade-offs, not just the sales points.
Choosing & buying
For many households it is: no mowing, a tidy lawn all year, and a usable surface where real grass struggles. It is an upfront investment, offset over time by very low running costs. Whether it is right for you depends on how you use your garden and how you feel about a synthetic surface, and our comparison guide helps you weigh it up.
Look at pile height (often 30 to 40mm for gardens), density, yarn quality, the colour blend (multiple greens plus a brown root zone look most natural), the backing and its drainage, and the UV and wear warranty.
Yes. See our supply page. Just remember a DIY lawn is only as good as the base you build beneath it.
Installation
A compacted aggregate sub-base (typically MOT Type 1) topped with a levelling layer of sharp sand, laid with gentle falls for drainage. See ground preparation.
Often, yes, if the surface is sound and drains. The method changes, and an underlay or shockpad may be used. More in this guide.
Yes. Water passes through the backing and sub-base; problem ground may need a soakaway. See drainage.
Pets & family
When correctly specified and kept clean, it is a hard-wearing, hygienic surface for both. Free drainage and a simple cleaning routine are key. See pet-friendly grass.
Solids are picked up as normal; urine should be rinsed through regularly. A free-draining system and occasional enzyme cleaner keep odours down. See grass for dogs and cleaning.
Care & lifespan
Commonly around 10 to 15 years with good installation and care. Read more.
Brush occasionally against the pile, rinse off dust and debris, remove leaves, and top up sand infill over time. See maintenance and cleaning.
It can warm up noticeably in direct sun, warmer than real grass. A quick rinse cools it, and shade helps. It is an honest trade-off worth knowing about.
End-of-life recycling options are improving but still limited in places. We are happy to discuss responsible disposal and replacement. See replacement.
