Why artificial grass

A usable garden, all year round

Artificial grass removes the mowing, the mud and the patchy summer lawn, without pretending there are no trade-offs. Here is what it does well.

Low maintenance

No mowing, feeding or re-seeding. An occasional brush and rinse keeps it looking its best.

Usable in all weather

A free-draining lawn is ready to use again quickly after rain, with no churned-up mud.

Natural appearance

Multi-tone fibres and a brown root zone give a realistic finish, not a flat plastic green.

Family & pet friendly

Hard-wearing and hygienic when specified and cleaned correctly, so it suits play and pets.

An honest view

Is artificial grass right for you?

We would rather you choose with your eyes open. Here are the genuine benefits alongside the trade-offs worth weighing.

Where it shines

  • Frees up weekends, with no mowing, feeding or edging
  • Stays green and tidy through winter and drought
  • Drains quickly, so less mud indoors and out
  • Ideal for shaded or high-traffic spots where real grass struggles
  • Child- and pet-friendly when correctly specified and cleaned

Worth considering

  • Surfaces can warm up noticeably in direct summer sun
  • It is a synthetic product and does not support wildlife as a natural lawn does
  • Good results depend on proper groundwork, because cheap, rushed jobs show
  • An upfront investment, offset over time by near-zero running costs
  • End-of-life recycling options are improving but still limited in places

How it works

A clear installation process

No two projects are identical, but good installations follow the same disciplined sequence. The groundwork beneath the grass matters as much as the grass itself.

Consultation

We discuss your space, how you use it and the look you want, then recommend a suitable grass and system.

Site assessment

We check levels, access, existing surface and drainage so the quote reflects the real groundwork needed.

Ground preparation

The old surface is removed and a compacted aggregate sub-base is built to the correct depth and falls.

Fitting & finishing

Membrane, grass, secure edges, tight joins and infill where appropriate, finished to a clean, natural result.

Budgeting

What does artificial grass cost?

The honest answer is: it depends. Supply-only grass is relatively inexpensive, but a properly installed lawn carries the cost of excavation, waste removal, aggregate, membrane, edging, the grass itself and skilled labour, and groundwork often accounts for the largest share.

As a general UK guide, a fully installed lawn commonly ranges from around £50 to £90 per square metre, higher in London and the South East. Small or awkward-access gardens can cost more per metre than large open ones.

Frequently asked questions

Modern artificial grass is made from synthetic yarns, usually polyethylene and polypropylene, sometimes with a nylon thatch, tufted into a backing and coated to hold the fibres in place. Better products combine different yarn shapes and two or three green tones with a brown root zone, which is what gives a natural, non-uniform look.

As a broad guide, supply-only grass is often around £12 to £35 per square metre, while a fully installed lawn typically falls between roughly £50 and £90 per square metre, with London and the South East at the higher end. Groundwork is the biggest variable. Our cost guide explains what drives the figure.

It can be an excellent surface for both, provided it drains well and is cleaned regularly. Free-draining backing, a permeable sub-base and a sensible rinse-and-brush routine keep it hygienic. See our pages on pet-friendly grass and grass for dogs.

A good-quality lawn that is installed correctly and cared for commonly lasts around 10 to 15 years, and sometimes longer. Lifespan depends on product quality, foot traffic, sun exposure and the standard of the groundwork beneath it. More in this article.

Yes. Water needs a clear route away through the backing's drainage holes and down through a permeable aggregate sub-base. On problem ground, extra drainage such as a soakaway may be needed, and it is far easier to design in before installation than to retrofit. See drainage.
